Keighley & Craven Athletic Club presents

The 2004 Club Championships (new and improved so you will all want to take part)

After a great deal of thought, discussion and stealing ideas off other athletic club’s websites, this year we have yet again improved the Club Championships. Whether you are a current star, have distant memories of great runs, or simply hopes for the future, there is something for you.

The Championships have been redesigned so that, whilst we can still establish who are the fastest athletes in the club, we are introducing an age-adjusted competition as well. The new scoring mechanism will give you a way to gauge your personal performance in races far more accurately so that you can aim for steady improvement (or decline in most cases). It is based on statistically-based calculations which relate to your age. The calculations are widely used in the USA and increasingly so in the UK. We are publicising race details in plenty of time – you have no excuses for not getting your entries in!

How’s It Gonna Work?
There are 3 overall championships to compete in:
• Road
• Fell
• Overall Grand Prix Champion (fell and road combined)

The Scoring System

There are two categories for each of Road, Fell and Overall Grand Prix Champion.

The first scoring category is the traditional 25 points to the first K&C; AC runner, 24 points for the second and so on.

The second scoring category is based on the athlete’s age and sex (male/female rather than frequency). The World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA) have established statistical tables which allow for a runners age and sex to be taken into account.. These tables allow a percentage adjustment to be made to the finishing time so that all ages can compete on an equal basis.

This can be shown by an example from the Otley 10 mile race last June. The following table shows the runners actual times and their adjusted times.

Name
Actual Time
Age Related Time

64:10

73:09

By using the WAVA tables, it allows athletes to get a handicap once they reach the age of about 36 years old (depending on distance). All ages will be taken from 1st Jan 2004.

The scoring for this is the usual 25 points for winner, 24 points for second place.

The tables will also be applied to fell races. As the tables are for set distance races, we will take the age-related table for the nearest corresponding distance.

The Road Championship

There are twelve races between 5K and 14 miles. The best 6 scores from the 12 races count.
The Fell Championship

There are twelve races between 3miles and 24 miles. The best 6 scores from the 12 races count.
Grand Prix Championship

The best qualifying 8 races count. This must be made up of either: 4 fell and 4 road, 5 road and 3 fell, or 5 fell and 3 road.
Club Titles For 2004

There will be an award for open winner and age related winner in each category.
• Overall Grand Prix Champion (male and female)
• Road Champion (male and female)
• Fell Champion (male and female)
• Most prolific runner (person with overall highest points total for all events)
The Events

Many events have full details on the web or can be entered online. The best two sites for individual race information and entry forms are:
