Keighley and Craven Athletic Club is a mixed ability, mixed age and mixed gender club that provides a wide range of athletic activities for juniors between 6 and 15 years old.
We are developing a system whereby we every school-age person in the Keighley District will automatically be a member of the club, and we will develop this as we work extensively in local schools helping with training and preparation for school and club events. We meet as a club twice a week for training nights, where the emphasis is on participation, enjoyment and fun and everyone can seek to fulfil their own potential at whatever level that is. Over the past 12 months we have grown in numbers and ability in many of the athletic disciplines.
Training NightsWe train on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Greenhead Track in Keighley. Our sessions run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm both nights. From April to October we are outside, using the various facilities at Greenhead School as well as organising short runs around the local area. During the winter months we use the internal facilities of the School. We are currently working with 3 groups of athletes, based on age/ability, but all with the fun element. These groups are:
6 to 8 years Athletic Games
8 to 10 years Introduction of athletic events
10 to 15 years Technical and progressive training
In the earlier years we concentrate on generic skills (running, jumping and throwing) that are of course applicable to any sporting or physical activity. This forms the basis of more specific coaching as athletes get older and fitter, when we then work on the 5 S's: speed, strength, stamina, suppleness and skill, to try to create fit, healthy all-round sports people who can choose. In terms of specific athletic skills, our coaches and invited guest coaches will be down to work with our older athletes on Tuesday nights. This is to give a wider range of coaching knowledge and event specific training.
We enter most local races for fell, x-country and road as well as putting athletes through to track and field and sportshall competitions. We work on the principal that if an athlete wants to compete, they can! We also arrange regular competitions internally and will be arranging competitions against other local clubs in the future. There are also opportunities within the club to take part in triathlon, cycling and orienteering events.
Membership to the juniors is FREE with a session fee of £1.00 every time they train or race with us
